For All The Birthdays

It’s not as if it matters how
We spend those yearly days
It doesn’t even need a nod
Or parties in different ways

It’s just about a moment when
Our hearts reach out to say
We see how long you’ve traveled here
The expression of your play

We see the scenes from your first act
Where foundation laid its plan
Where hopes and dreams filled little eyes
Building castles in the sand

Where hearts were new and opened wide
When life began its knocks
Where some things didn’t go too well
With folks from around the block

And then as time and days went past
We saw the plot grow deep
Where character began to show
Where consciousness took a leap

Where sorry taught and lessons learned
Created intermission peak
And we can’t wait to be here when
More acts we have a chance to greet

Where laughter turns the drama round
And loving concludes the strife
Where we stand up and take a bow
And applaud for the total life

And so a day to mark that start
A day when the curtains rose
A day we’re glad we got to share
A smile at your life’s special prose
